Little Mix Cast a Spell Over Manila

Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock are leading a new generation of Girl Power

Whatever you think a big pop concert should be, Little Mix has it all sorted. Smooth harmonies. Check. Pitch perfect. Yes. Dance routines. Spot on. Shimmering costumes. We approve.

One of the successful girl groups to come out of the UK since The Spice Girls, the X Factor alumni powered through their catalogue of candy colored, top hits with an energetic, almost flawless and fun performance at their first-ever Manila concert at the Kia Theatre in Cubao, Quezon City.

Championing self-belief, strength and independence, the girls indeed put on the show of their lives. After becoming the first group to win the X Factor in 2011, the fab foursome have gone from strength to strength and their amazing talent was evident as they worked their way through one up-tempo pop hit after another.

During the 90—minute show, there was no mistaken that these girls can sing and dance. There was a lot of writhing and racy dancing with a troupe of equally scantily-clad men but the vocals never struggled despite the high energy dance moves. In fact, they passed with flying colors, and then some.

Everything about the Weird tour was loud, fun, fearless, bold, and inspiring.

One proud Filipino mixer commented, “I don’t know how they do it. They literally had me when they said, “Manila, are you ready to get weird? So I just let loose my inner teenager self by singing along, screaming and cheering. I’m not even sure I’ll be able to speak clearly tomorrow,” Sophia Mendoza remarked. “Definitely one of best concerts this year. I love you, Little Mix.”

So what were the best highlights of the Little Mix Live in Manila show?

  • The intro/entrance was absolutely captivating. Little Mix started the show descending a staircase, showing off their slinky physiques in figure-hugging outfits.
  • The girls singing “Hair” being everything we wanted it to be live and more.
  • “DNA,” ‘cos it’s “DNA”.
  • The emotional, powerful ballad “Secret Love Song Pt. II” (YASSS) definitely a standout.
  • The fab foursome singing “Wings”. Another highlight.
  • The girls finding the time to explain to their fans that this show is all about embracing your inner weirdness, being yourself and building self-confidence, thus sending a powerful, positive message to their predominantly (younger) female fans. Segue to “Weird People”.
  • “Salute,” obvs.
  • Spice Girls Reference. Fun and feel-good. Girl power continues.

The crowd went wild for every single song. Big, loud cheers from the mainly female (and quite young) crowd erupted.

Little Mix saved the best till last with an encore of “Black Magic,” which was absolutely spot on – because Little Mix had cast a spell over Manila.
